October 26/15: I was adopted!
Handsome boy Triton arrived in our care on September 12 and is doing very well in his foster home. He is a young fella who has much to learn and is making great progress thanks to the hard work of his foster family. At 29 months of age he is an active, goofy, comical, young male who is in need of some structure in his life to help him mature into a well mannered adult.
Triton is well suited to an active family where he will have a lot of opportunities to exercise his body and his mind. He knows some basic commands and his foster family will be working to improve his reliability with respect to following them. His leash manners are a work in progress. Triton will benefit greatly from an experienced handler who can teach him the basics that he has not yet learned. Obedience classes would be great for him!
A typical young, boisterous boy who needs some manners, Triton can sometimes become over stimulated and play-mouth and jump up when excited. He means no harm, but he's a big boy and could easily knock down children. For this reason he is best suited to a home where there are no young kids.
Understandably after being bounced around to several homes and not receiving many opportunities for training or socialization, Triton can be a little shy meeting new people. His foster family have observed that he is particularly shy around young men. This is being worked on in his foster home and he is making great progress. He is very fond of women, and those people who he is familiar with are greeted with great enthusiasm (a little too much so at times!)
New situations and places are stressful for him, but with a confident handler at his side he relaxes easily. Further opportunities to get and explore the world and meet new people will make a big difference for him. Triton really just needs someone in his life who will take some time to take him out to explore, and teach him how to be a happy, well mannered Newf.
Triton has been friendly and respectful with the female dog at his
foster home, and has been curious but appropriate with the cat. He
previously lived in a home with some small breed dogs and could happily
join a family with another respectful four footed pal. He has now been tested with large breed males and he did very well, responded to direction and was easy to call off during high arousal play. Good boy Triton!
Triton appears to be in good health and has now been neutered.
He is being fostered in the Ottawa, ON area and his approved adopters will be required to pick him up in person. We will consider homes within a 1 day drive of his foster location -- this includes parts of ON, QC, NB, NY, NJ, ME, PA, CT and more.
An adoption donation of $500 will apply.
