Update on closure of Newf Friends

To our many friends and supporters

As you may have noticed, we have been closed to intakes since July, and we'd like to offer you a little more information.

After 14 years of volunteering with Newf Friends, I made the decision to step down from my role as Director due to changes in my life that made it impossible for me to effectively run the rescue.  Even with an amazing team of dedicated volunteers who all worked tirelessly, the responsibilities involved in properly running a rescue became too much.

Upon my resignation, the decision was made to close Newf Friends to intakes.  We were hoping to have some information available by now about the future of Newf rescue in south, central and eastern Ontario but at the moment we don't have any commitments made.  We have approached both of the regional clubs in our catchment area to see if they can fill the gap, as some regional clubs do in other provinces.  No decisions have been made, and we don't anticipate any concrete decisions for a while yet.

Once those decisions are made, our Board will then work to dispense our remaining funds to the groups who will be taking over, to ensure that the funds go to help Newfs in need.  At the moment we continue to offer any needed financial support to other Newf rescue groups across Canada, as we have always done.

Our website will remain active as a resource, and our Breeder Referral List will be kept up to date.  Our Facebook page will also continue to be used to share information and courtesy post Newfs in need.

Thank you to all of our many supporters, adopters, donors, and most of all, our amazing volunteers.  I know we all made a tremendous difference in the lives of so many Newfs, and we should be proud of the work we did and what we accomplished.

I look forward to seeing you at future Newf events.

Warmly,
Sandra

All about Yukon
This sweet one-year-old fella is full of puppy energy and looking for a family who has the time and energy to give him the active, happy, loving home he needs. He just arrived in foster care and we will be assessing him over the coming days to determine his needs.

His foster parents report that he is a very sweet boy, a real love.

Yukon has completed obedience training and knows his basic commands.   Like many young male Newfs, he sometimes forgets his manners and can become quite boisterous.  An owner who has good handling skills, and the time to commit to further training will be best for him.   He needs some work on general arousal control when he is excited, and following instructions even when he'd rather not! A calm handler who can use a Nothing in Life is Free training strategy will be successful with this sweet young boy.

Yukon gets along with other dogs and could join a home with a well-mannered four-footed pal.

Health-wise, Yukon has some allergy issues resulting in itchy feet and hot spots.  We are working to address this. He is also being treated for a nasty UTI which will hopefully be resolved soon.

More details to come as we get to know him.

All about Solomon

What a love this boy is!  Solomon is a mellow, well-mannered Newf who just arrived in our care.  His foster family report that he has excellent house manners, knows his commands, is quiet and polite, an absolute delight!

He came to us through no fault of his own when his owners could no longer meet his needs.

His bloodwork shows no issues and he appears to be in good health. We have updated his vaccines, taken him to the groomer, and he is all spiffed up and ready to roll.  He has some arthritis as senior Newfs often do, but he gets around well and has no issues getting in or out of vehicles, etc.

His previous owners said that he sometimes will get hot spots (seasonally, perhaps some mild environmental allergies?), especially after swimming, so attention to grooming and proper drying is essential.  We've had him groomed and found one small hot spot which is being treated, otherwise, all is well.

We are told he gets along fine with well-mannered dogs and have tested him with another Newf so far and he was wonderful meeting her.  He could join a home with another mellow dog.

All about Bruce

This sweet boy is looking for his perfect forever home.  Bruce is a happy, affectionate, playful pup who knows his basic commands and has nice house manners.

If you're looking for an active, loyal companion, Bruce might be the boy for you.  Walks and playdates at the dog park, swimming and chasing toys, cuddling and hanging out, Bruce loves to be with his family and to have a great time.

A typical young male, Bruce has lots of energy to burn and is looking for a family that has the time to meet his exercise and training needs.  Like many young giant breed dogs, he can be a bit boisterous at times and may jump up on people, so further training and socialization will be key to helping him mature into a calm and polite adult.

He is currently still living with his surrendering family until a foster space opens up (or an adoptive home is found).  We are told he lives with a rabbit that hops around the apartment, so he could join a home with a cat or other small pet.

He loves going to the dog park and has many four-footed pals.  He especially loves smaller dogs!  Having said that, he is currently sharing his apartment with an intact male and the two of them have issues guarding resources like toys and food.  We would recommend that Bruce lives either as the only dog in his adoptive home, or he joins a home with a well-mannered female dog and an owner that is prepared to set Bruce up for success.
