Dixie

 Dixie
2013-015

October 26: Dixie was adopted!

Young, playful and super affectionate, sweet Dixie Chic arrived here on July 31 and is looking for a wonderful family to call her own.  This lovely girl was born May 4, 2010 so is just 3 years young.  Her owner had some significant changes in her life and felt that it was in Dixie's best interest to re-home her.

Dixie had a condition called cherry eye  (a disorder impacting the third eyelid) which we have corrected surgically.  She has healed nicely and is ready to join a new family.

Dixie is in good health and is an energetic girl who has good mobility and loves to romp and play.

Dixie is a gentle girl and loves to receive attention and hugs.  She knows basic commands, although her leash manners need work.  She has good off-leash recall while out walking in the woods with a pack of dogs.  In more distracting environment she will likely need some work on her recall.

She lacks confidence in new situations and wants to run and hide.  Because of this she is probably not suited to first time dog owners, but will thrive in a home where she will have an experienced owner at her side to help her feel secure and build her confidence.  She will be an excellent candidate for obedience work to help her bond with her adoptive family and boost her confidence.

An active family who will give her lots of opportunities for exercise will be the ideal match.  She LOVES the water and is an excellent swimmer with strong rescue instincts -- she is a great Newf for doing water rescue training with!

Dixie is a little bit of an insecure girl in new situations, but with a confident handler and some opportunities to get out and socialize she will quickly improve.  Meeting new people she will bark but responds well to redirection and this behaviour should be easily resolved.

Since arriving in foster care Dixie has been introduced to a number of dogs and although she is quite playful once she knows them, at first she is intimidated and nervous meeting new animals and wants to run away.  With a confident handler at her side she easily works through her nervousness, and within 2 days of arriving she was romping and playing with 7 other dogs at her temporary foster home!  She is very playful and thoroughly enjoys playing chase with large and small dogs. A home with another very well socialized dog for her to play with will be great for Dixie.

Dixie has been  vaccinated and spayed.  She is being fostered in Keswick, ON and her adopters will be required to pick her up in person.  An adoption donation of $500 applies.

Adopter Update: Heidi

Hi Sandra

Just wanted to say Hi and let you know that Heidi is still doing great. She has become a bit mischievous now that she feels at home and as you can see from the attached picture, she just loves my bed. If i'm lucky she will let me share with her. Lol

She has decided that it's too hot for her to go for walks and when she has had enough she just sits down or even lies on the ground and will not move until I turn around. We have had lots of strange stares on the walking trail. People asking if she is alright and I have to answer "she's fine, just stubborn!". Lol

No signs of any seizures and her cheek has healed up just fine. She looks a bit funny because her right jowl is about twice as long as her left one now. She is lopsided but just adorable.

I hope things are well with you and the other doggies and thanks again for bringing Heidi and I together.

Cassie

Cassie
2013-014

Aug 13/13:  I was adopted!

What a beauty!

4 yr old Cassie is a new arrival and is sure to be a fantastic companion for the right family.

This lovely girl is from a reputable breeder who is involved in Cassie's rehoming and has asked us to help connect Cassie with the perfect family.  This breeder will be available throughout Cassie's life to offer advice and support to her approved adopters.

Cassie has lived with other dogs and could happily join a family with another 4 footed playmate.  She is not a fan of cats at all though, so a cat-free home is a must!

Sweet Cassie is in need of a home after her owner suffered an injury and is no longer able to provide the level of care that Cassie requires.   With Cassie's best interest in mind, she has made the difficult decision to rehome Cassie so that she can enjoy a happy, active life.  She contacted her breeder who is working with us to find that perfect family.

Cassie absolutely LOVES to swim, she was raised on the lake and would be a wonderful dog to participate in water rescue work.  An active family who will give Cassie lots of opportunities to participate in working dog activities would be great for her.

Cassie is excellent with children and is an all around lovely gal. She has good house manners and knows basic obedience.

She weighs around 125 lbs and is a little on the tall side. She is spayed, her vaccines are UTD and she appears to be in good health.  She is in her breeder's care in Ontario and Cassie's breeder will help arrange transport  to an approved home.  An adoption donation to Newf Friends of $500 applies.

To be considered for adopting Cassie please email us a completed adoption application.

Maxwell

Maxwell
2013-012

Aug 1: Maxwell has been adopted!

This handsome boy just arrived on July 23 and is currently under assessment in foster care.

Maxwell came to us because his owners felt they didn't have time for him -- he lived with this family for 4 years,  joining them after his first family were unable to provide for him.  He is looking for a loving, stable forever family where he will get lots of loving and attention.

Further details about Max will be posted as we get to know him., but so far he is proving himself to be a well mannered boy.  He has great doggie social skills with the other dogs in his foster home and an all around nice fellow.

Max is very affectionate and loves to have a lap to curl up in -- he will do great in a home with someone who loves to spend lots of time with their dog.

Maxwell is on the small side for a Newf, more the size of a retriever.   His surrendering family claim he is a purebred who was imported by his original family, but were given no paperwork and were unable to provide the name of the kennel he was from. He is microchipped, but the chip was never registered to anyone.

We are told he was born June 30, 2006 so is 7 years old.  He is a happy, healthy, friendly fellow who seems MUCH younger than this.

He will be neutered and vaccinated next week, then will be ready to join an adoptive family.

An adoption donation of $500 applies.  Maxwell is being fostered in Mississauga.  His approved adopters will be required to pick him up in person.

Tae

 Tae
2013-0011
Sept 18: Tae has been adopted!

Tae is a lovely 8 years young female Newf who recently arrived in our care.  She is a friendly, affectionate and sensitive gal who will make a wonderful companion for the right family.

Tae came to Newf Friends through no fault of her own and now she is looking for a quiet place to call her forever home.  She was well loved by her owner and is an affectionate girl who loves to be petted and adored. Her past life was not always wonderful and there are things that frighten Tae that we don’t always understand.  Anyone adopting Tae will have to be patient with her as she regains her confidence but it will be worth everything that you put into it.

She loves long, slow walks through the woods and a place to get her paws wet.
Tae would most enjoy a home where her Human is home all day or there is another “mature” playmate for her as she has always had companionship.

Tae loves to play with other dogs when they are willing but she never pushes the limits.
Tae LOVES her toys and like many Newfs, she is happiest wandering around with a stuffed toy in her mouth.

A nice, quiet home would make Tae very happy -- she'd be great company for empty nesters.

She is spayed and UTD on vaccinations.  Tae takes Metacam and glucosamine to help with her arthritis.

Tae is being fostered in Pickering, Ontario - her approved adopter will be required to pick her up in person.  Because she is over 8 yrs of age and requires medication for arthritis a reduced adoption donation of $350 applies.

King

 King
2013-013

Sept 19, 2013 -- I was adopted!  Yay!

Handsome boy King arrived in our care on July 22, 2013 and he is doing great in foster care.  He is a wonderful, gentle, affectionate Newf and will make a fabulous companion for the right family.

Due to excessive matting it was in King's best interest to shave him upon arrival.  His coat should be grown in nicely by winter.

What a handsome boy!
A beloved pet, King came to us through no fault of his own.  His owner's health had declined and King was left with nobody to care for him.  This sweet, sensitive boy was depressed and out of sorts upon arrival, but is doing much better now.  King is looking for a loving family to call his own.  All he wants is some TLC and companionship.

King is 8 years old and has some mobility issues due to hip dysplasia/elbow issues necessitating that he live in a home without stairs/slippery floors. He is in need of dropping some weight and hopefully with weight loss his mobility will improve. We have started him on an NSAID which has already made a big difference for King and he is getting around well and has begun playing and having fun!

Don't let his mobility issues deter you -- King is a very silly, playful, fun loving boy who enjoys a good game of tug-of-war and loves to chase tennis balls and carry his ducky around.  He is affectionate and very people oriented.

We have not had an opportunity to assess him with male dogs but family members of his owner suggested that he may have previously had issues with some large males.  A home with no other dogs, or a very mellow, well socialized female is required.

Due to his mobility issues and sensitivity King would be best in a home without young children (although a home where well mannered children visit on occassion would be fine).
Handsome boy King, fresh from the groomer.  Due to excessive matting his coat could not be saved so he has been clipped down.

If you would like to be considered for adopting King please complete our application found in the Forms section of this site.
King has been neutered and is up to date on vaccines.
He is being fostered in Owen Sound, ON.

Because King is over 8 yrs of age and has mobility issues which require monthly medications a reduced adoption donation of $300 applies.

Donations are welcomed to help us cover the monthly costs of King's care during his stay in foster care.  If you are interested in making a donation towards his care please visit our donation page for options.  If you would consider sponsoring King's costs during his stay, please contact us.

Adopter Update: Molly

Here's a recent update from Molly's adoptive family, shared with permission.  They also adopted a retired dog from a reputable breeder on the same day and the two girls are getting along well.  We love these happy endings!

Molly on the left, Izzy on the right

 Hi all,

Here are a few pics of our girls. Don't they look cute?

We love them so much, and they played again today...So great to see...

The other day a rabbit was sitting in front of them and they didn't do anything!!!!!! And in the woods we saw two squirrels who were "doing it" in the middle of the horsetrail and the dogs didn't do anything, the squirrels however jumped in a tree while still engaged with each other LOL  If I were walking with our Naja well, you know what would have happened!!

Only thing is... they both want to jump in anyone's car!! This morning the contractor came who's gonna build our garage, he has a big pickup truck, they were so excited, Molly jumped against his car with her big front paws in the window, what a sight. Is this the old dog that can hardly walk?

And yesterday evening a couple in a car stopped while I was walking them and they stepped out of their car and I could hardly hold the girls from jumping in that car...Now I don't know what to think about that....don't they like it here?  The people just lost their Bernese Mountain Dog and they just wanted to cuddle with Molly and Izzy...

Must say our home is full of life again!!l

Bogart

Bogart
2013-0010

July 19:  A meet and greet is being set up with Bogart and a potential family!

UPDATE:  July 25:  Bogart's Meet and Greet was great -- guess who has an approved home!

Bogart meets his fabulous new family!

7 1/2 year old Bogie is an absolute delight!  This wonderful fella is everything newfs are known for.  He is big, beautiful, sweet and easy going.  Bogie is beyond fantastic with other dogs and cats, good around our children, listens well and is just plain adorable.
Bogart-150 pounds of slobbery goodness!

Bogie the newf hanging out with his pals poolside.

Bogie hangs out with multiple dogs daily and although he loves to lounge with the others, he prefers to rest in the shade and wait for them when they decide to go for a gallop or have a little wrestle.  He becomes attached to his chosen people quickly and happily follows them where ever he is invited to go.

Bogart would do well with most families and would happily join a family with another well mannered dog that he could chill out with.

He is neutered, vaccinated and in good health.

Bogie is being fostered in the Ottawa area.  His adoptive family will be required to pick him up in person.  An adoption donation of $500 applies.
