Photos with the Easter Bunny

What a happy looking Newf at our Photos with the Easter Bunny Fundraiser held earlier this month.

A HUGE thank you goes out to Sandy and Jeff and all of the volunteers at Dunbarton-Fairport United Church, to our Newf Friends volunteers who helped out with the event and to Joseph Cuan Photography for doing a great job taking pictures.

The event raised $1000 for Newf Friends! Wow! Thanks everyone who took part in this great day!

Happy Gotcha' Day River!

Here's a great update from River's mom!

Happy Gotcha Day River!
I cannot believe it has been 2 years already!
I knew River was meant to be with us from the first moment I saw her pic. I clearly remember showing her to Peter, Cal, and Timber on my laptop one morning at breakfast and talking about applying for her. We followed her story along through her surgeries for many months as I cared for my Timber through her remaining ones. River truly rescued me this day 2 years ago. Thank you River for teaching me that there is always room in your heart for one more. Thank you to Newf Friends for rescuing and 'repairing' this precious soul. We are so blessed to have River!

Snickers

Snickers
2014-008
June 21:  SNICKERS HAS BEEN ADOPTED!

June 9: Update: A meet and Greet is being set up for a potential home for Snickers!  Paws crossed!

Sweet gal Snickers is cute as can be!  This lovely 4.5 yr old girl was surrendered due to changes in her owner's life.

She is doing very well in her foster home and is a wonderful girl who is friendly and affectionate.  She knows basic commands and has nice house manners.

Snickers gets along with other well socialized dogs and could join a family with another four footed playmate.

She would be happiest in a home where someone is around much of the time.

Snickers has been brought up to date with her vaccines and is now recovering from her spay surgery.  She will be ready to be adopted by mid May.  Her skin and coat are not in great condition and she appears to have been shaved, but with good food we are seeing an improvement.  She has been seen by a dermatologist and meds have been prescribed to help get her skin issues under control.

She is being fostered in the Paris, ON area and her approved adopters will be required to pick her up in person.  An adoption donation of $500 applies.

Spring Thaw means Dangerous Waterways!

Warmer weather, rain and melting snow are sure signs of spring.  This also means ice conditions are very dangerous on ponds, rivers and lakes.  Rising water levels and spring run off make for fast moving water and strong currents.  Pets can break through thin ice or fall into rapid running water and be swept away in the blink of an eye.
Each year family pets are lost due to unsafe waterways.  Don't let your companion be a victim.  Keep pets safe --  prevent drowning and deadly hypothermia by ensuring that dogs and other pets are kept away from water during the spring thaw.  Swimming season will be here before you know it, keep pets out of and away from water until then!

National Volunteer Week

April 6 - 12, 2014 is National Volunteer Week -- a time to show appreciation for all of the volunteers who give their time to make their communities a better place.

It takes a team to run a rescue and here at Newf Friends we are fortunate to have a truly phenomenal group of volunteers.   Thank you to each and every one of you!

If you'd like to get involved with Newf Friends we'd love to hear from you!  There's lots of ways to help out so you don't need to jump in with both feet if you're more of a stick-your-toe-in-the-pool kind of person.

A few key areas we always need help with:

1. Foster Homes - short or long term - this is our greatest need. Most of all we need fosters who offer home-like settings and a structured environment. This can be a home with or without other dogs.

2. Fundraising -- we need help with fundraising in any capacity. We are not only looking for people to help out with this but we need someone to fill the role of Fund-raising Coordinator--overseeing all fund raising initiatives.

3. Home visit volunteers -- we always need people who can do a home assessment for us to assess potential adopters across the province

4. Help with transport - this could be driving a Newf to the vet, picking a newf up from a surrendering family and bringing them to a foster home, or helping with a leg of transport across the nation. Whatever you can manage.

5. Intakes/Assessments -- this would involve meeting with a surrendering family and assessing/possibly picking up the dog and all of the paper work involved with that.

6. Behavioural assessment/training -- any pros out there who can spare some time?

7. Photographers -- sometimes the dogs are too far away for me to go and photograph them so we need volunteers in different areas who are skilled at capturing the perfect petfinder picture. You would need to be able to visit foster homes to take pictures of
dogs. Not all of our foster families have cameras!

8. Reference checks -- We need volunteers to check personal and vet reference of potential adopters.

9. Writing a newsletters, articles and more.

10. Anything else you can think of -- we always need help!

So please, if you have been thinking about helping rescue but are not sure of what to do to help, drop us a line and let us know you are available -- we'll find something for you to do!  Our volunteer and foster applications can be found at http://newf-friends.blogspot.ca/p/contact-us.html
