Newf Friends Newfoundland Dog Rescue is a volunteer run, foster home based rescue group for Newfoundland Dogs in need in Ontario, Canada. We place Newfs into carefully screened homes in Ontario and surrounding provinces and states. Established in 2008.

Hello Carole and Cubby!!!!
We have been keeping Newfie VERY busy! One thing
is for sure....he LOVES the water. As soon as we turned down the drive
way to go to the lake at my mother's house he started whining and
prancing like I have never seen him and when I opened the car door all I
saw was his tail go by. He went straight for the water and only came
out for brief rests for the next three hours. He had a blast, it didn't
matter how far out I threw his buoy, he would bring in it and whine at
me to throw it again. What a treat that was, he is too much fun.
We
have also been going to events hosted by our regional newfoundland club
and are interested in drafting. Newfie is so relaxed and eager to
please that within one hour of being at his first draft clinic he was
harnessed, hooked up to a wagon, and pulling it. I am just so amazed at
how adaptable he
is, he will do anything I ask him to. Occasionally he forgets his
manners and I have to give him a command more than once but that is the
exception, he is very well behaved. On the rare occasion that he has
been naughty he gives it away by slumping around and hanging his head
and then I have to try and figure out what he did....too funny. Last
incident involved eating pizza out of the garbage but it wasn't until he
passed some aluminum foil the next day that I realized what was going
on.
We are still working our way through obedience so that he can take
his CGC test and then we can get his therapy certification as well. We
have been distracted by all the fun in the water and drafting. I am
seriously considering working toward titles for him in both areas, there
are tests for water dog in September, I am quite confident that he
could accomplish the junior level by the end of the summer. The draft
test is in
October and the club has drafting classes every Tuesday
night at a members home so I think we might have a chance at that as
well. We are going to our local library this weekend to discuss Newfie
becoming a volunteer for children to read to. With the hot weather it
will be nice to be indoors but still be working.
We just spent Memorial day at our camp in the
Adirondacks and he was
able to swim his heart out again and this time I had a brand new dog
dryer that worked very nicely. He got to ride on the pontoon boat but
all he really wanted to do was jump off of it. Dave and I are trying to
come up with some sort of ramp that will allow him to get on and off
the boat. It sits up high off the water and there is no way to get him
in the boat, he is too heavy. I have seen a few products on line, one
is a ladder but I think that is just an injury waiting to happen, and
the other is a ramp with foam on the underside of it. I think the ramp
would work nicely because that is what he uses to get in and out of our
vehicles, but to purchase one would cost $410.00. I know we can build
something similar we just have to find the proper materials. I am

Just a short note to up date you
on
our wonderful boy Finn. There are four HART and Newf-friends alumni
within a five minute walk from our home. Finn was the first, Luke a
black dog from HART, Maggie a Saint and Ester a young female
Newf. There is also a large Newf, Bear from a Newfoundland rescue in
Whitby. Now back to Finn.
It will
be three years this month since Finnegan became a member of our
family. We are as thrilled with Finn as the first day he entered our
lives. He is everything I wished for in a companion. He is always by my
side. We go to the beach every day regardless of the weather. He is a
star swimmer and never misses a chance to retrieve almost
anything afloat in the water.
My Berner, Shannon was
diagnosed with Wobblers this winter by a neurologist confirmed by a CT
scan. Finn has been so gentle with her. She still goes to the beach
with us, however, she no longer swims with Finn. The evenings they sleep beside each other curled up
by my chair.

Gorgeous young boy Caesar came into our care on May 11, 2013. This guy is young, happy and as goofy as could be! He was surrendered by a family that could not meet his needs so he's now searching for an active family to join.
Born on October 11, 2012, this guy is just 7 months old, still just a pup. We all know what that means, don't we??? Yep, you guessed it. He's full of beans and requires lots of daily exercise to burn his puppy energy. If he doesn't get his energy out, he's something of a brat and will mouth you, jump up and be a typical young hooligan. He will need a confident owner that is willing to work with him on channeling his enthusiasm and teaching him basic obedience. He already weighs 123 lbs so it's imperative that a boisterous youngster like Caesar be guided and taught proper manners because he's still got some growing to do! No-one wants or needs a 150 lb dog jumping on them! Ouch!
At his foster home there are many other dogs and cats and Caesar is fantastic with all of them. Big, small, male, female, young, old... Caesar acts appropriately with all dogs and would love to join a family with another four-footed playmate. He has no issues with other animals being around his food, toys or bones either (and he's great with cats too!). What a good boy he is!
With people, Caesar is great. He has already perfected the Newfie lean and he loves to have his belly scratched. Everyone is his new best friend! When he's super excited he does have a tendency to give "love nibbles" to your hand but his foster Mom is working on redirecting this behaviour.
When Caesar meets new dogs, he immediately wants to play and has great doggie social skills. Check out the video below of him just after he met a spunky young Beagle. What a good time they had!

Full steam ahead!
In the house Caesar is pretty good (once he's had enough exercise, that is!). He likes to chew his bones or play with his toys (especially squeaky ones) and will happily amuse himself. His foster family hasn't seen him chew or destroy anything but he's been kept very well exercised because we all know that a tired puppy = a good puppy. He is fully crate and house trained as well.

One thing about Caesar we need to warn you about... he's a very very VERY messy drinker. We swear he sloshes more water on the floor than he gets in his mouth. A mop needs to be close at hand! He also likes to splash around in it outside, whether it's a puddle, bucket, from the hose, kiddie pool or muddy creek. See for yourself in the video below.

At least after his mud bath Caesar does try to dry himself off a bit. Ha ha haaaaa! What a clown he is!
Caesar is up to date with vaccines, in good health and neutered. He currently weighs 123 lbs and his birthday is October 11, 2012. He is being fostered in the Guelph, Ontario area.
His adopters will be required to live within 5-6 hours of his foster home (at the most!) and pick him up in person. Homes outside of this area will not be considered. Please refer to our FAQs to understand why. Please do not email us asking if we will make an exception to our placement policy for you -- we will not.

Just thought that we’d send along an update on Rupert for you...along with a couple of photos of him enjoying the deck...
We
are really loving our new boy...he is so well behaved in the house and
just loves the couch...he isn’t fond of cameras though so we have a
tough time getting good shots of him...he’s developed a real fondness
for the rope in the photos and would play tug or fetch with this rope
all day long!!!
His
leash walking is much improved, with the help of a few lessons for us
with a great obedience trainer here in the area...it is a process but he
is much better than he was and doesn’t pull nearly so much on the
leash...we have an appointment coming up with someone who can help with
his issues with other large male dogs but it hasn’t been a problem so
far so...fingers crossed. Off leash is still a bit of a problem as the
many squirrels seem to love to taunt him and he loves to chase!! He is
learning that he can’t climb trees and that they are a bit of a waste of
energy which is good...
The
weather is getting nice so we will be introducing Rupert to his “beach”
down the street very soon and will forward some photos of his first
swimming adventure over the next week or two!
