Scooby

Scooby
2013-024

December 29, 2013: Scooby was adopted!!

Meet Scooby, an absolutely adorable fella' who arrived in our care on October 28 and is  having a blast at his foster home.

Scooby loves to run and play and splash in the water and generally have an awesome time.  He is a young, happy, playful boy with a real zest for life.  He's looking for a great family where he will get lots of attention and opportunities for exercise and stimulation.

Scooby came to us when his owner realized that it wasn't fair to Scooby to be spending long days alone.  He made the decision to turn Scooby over to us so that we can find him a great home where he will get lots of love, attention and playtime!

Scooby gets  along with most other dogs and could happily join a family where he'll have another well socialized playmate to romp and wrestle with.   He plays hard and is a boisterous boy so is best suited to an equally playful dog who is not terribly dominant.

He is finding cats to be pretty tempting to chase but is learning that this is not allowed.  A home with a dog savvy indoor cat would be fine.

Scooby knows a few basic commands, in French, and is currently being taught commands in English.  He is a smart boy who is eager to please so he should know his new commands pretty quickly.  He would benefit from obedience classes as he is full of energy and puppy enthusiasm and like all young Newfs, needs to learn to control that energy.

He is clumsy around children and easily knocks them over unintentionally so is best suited to a home without young kids.

Scooby is just a young Newf, only 20 months old, and is in good health.  He has been vaccinated and neutered and is ready to join an adoptive family.

To be considered for adopting Scooby please complete our adoption application found in the "forms" section and email it back to us.  Scooby is being fostered in the Foresters Falls, ON (Ottawa) area and his adoptive family will be required to pick him up in person.  An adoption donation of $500 applies.

Houston

 Houston
2013-025

Dec 15, 2013: Houston was adopted. Yippeeeee!!

Goofy boy Houston arrived late on October 24 and is having a blast racing around the yard at his foster home!  This sweet and playful boy is full of enthusiasm and is a fun-loving, gentle pup.

Houston is around 20 months old and came to us after his owner recognized that they were not the right family to meet his needs.

Houston gets along well with other animals and is friendly and playful.  He gets a little over-excited and wants to play, play, play but we expect that as he settles into his foster home with a routine where his exercise needs are being met he will do great.

We will be neutering Houston shortly and then he will be ready to join an adoptive family.  An adoption donation of $500 applies.  He is being fostered in the Brantford area and his approved adopters will be required to pick him up in person.

Taking a breather after racing around and playing non-stop for several hours.

Chloe

Chloe
2013-023

November 4, 2013: Chloe was adopted

Meet Chloe, an adorable Newf who arrived in our care on October 24.  Isn't she pretty?

So far Chloe is proving herself to be a lovely, friendly girl.  We've exposed her to a range of people and places and she is taking everything in stride, she responds well to direction and seems like a terrific Newf.

All groomed out and looking pretty!
She came to us through no fault of her own when her owners felt they were not able to meet her needs.  Her surrendering family mentioned difficulties they were having with her, but we have not seen any of these issues so far.  Chloe responds well to a confident handler and will walk nicely on lead, and follows basic commands.  We will continue to assess her in the coming weeks.  With adequate exercise and mental stimulation, in the care of a dog savvy owner, Chloe will thrive.

She's been introduced to loads of new dogs, and has been terrific with everyone.  She is living in a foster home with several other dogs.  We will continue to test her in the coming days.
This sweet girl will be turning 4 in December and is spayed and UTD on vaccines.  In need of dropping a few pounds, Chloe will benefit from an exercise and weight loss program.

To be considered for adopting Chloe please complete an adoption application found in our forms section and email it back to us.  Chloe is being fostered in the Mississauga area and her approved adoptive family will be required to pick her up in person.  An adoption donation of $500 applies.

On intake - I need to be groomed!

Tank's Happy Hips Fund!

Tank needs your help to raise $6000 for his new hips!

Donations can be made online through our Canada Helps page.  We are a division of HART and a tax receipt will be issued for your kind donation.  Please select TANK's HAPPY HIPS from the drop down menu to direct your donation to Tank!

Sweet 2 year old Tank arrived in our care on September 30th and has been under assessment in foster care.  This gentle and well mannered boy has very serious orthopedic issues and after consulting with several vets we have determined that it is in Tank's best interest to replace his hips.

Given his young age and otherwise good health it is felt that with corrective surgery Tank will be able to enjoy a long, happy, pain-free life. So with the help of you, our supporters, let's get Tank the new hips he needs!

We've done numerous knee surgeries, but this is the first time we've needed to fund-raise for hip replacement therapy -- boy, oh, boy it's a big undertaking!  We've been contacting a variety of specialists and prices for replacement of both hips are in the $10,000 - $12,000 range, but we have found one reputable surgeon who will perform the surgeries for around $9000.

Our action plan is as follows:
  • Begin a weight loss program for Tank to prepare him for surgery -  this has already begun and so far he is doing great!
  • Begin hydrotherapy - target date November
  • Replace the worse of his hips as soon as he reaches his goal weight - target date December/January
  • Rehabilitation over the winter
  • Reassess Tank's mobility in the Spring and determine if the second hip needs to be replaced at that time (it is expected that we will need to replace both)
Our fundraising goal for this fall is $6000 to cover hydrotherapy, surgery on one hip, medication and rehabilitation.  If in the Spring we determine that a second surgery is needed we will do more fundraising at that time.

Your support is greatly appreciated to help us raise the funds to give Tank the pain-free life he deserves.    Please help!

Donations can be made online through our Canada Helps page.  We are a division of HART and a tax receipt will be issued for your kind donation.  Please select TANK's HAPPY HIPS from the drop down menu to direct your donation specifically to Tank!

Eddie

 Eddie
2013-21
October 18, 2013 :  Eddie has been adopted!

This wonderful boy arrived at Newf Friends on October 11 and is getting himself settled into his foster home.  A change in his owner's work situation meant long days left alone for Eddie and his owner felt that Ed would be happier with a family who could spend more time with him.

Eddie is a fun-loving Newf who gets along with everyone he meets.  He is playful with other dogs and enjoys romping and wrestling.  He does become a little over stimulated when meeting new dogs but with some work this should be easily resolved.  He could happily join a family with another well socialized dog.

He has nice house manners, is housebroken and not destructive when unattended.  Eddie is a pretty easy going boy, but does need work  on his leash manners.  He gets excited when he sees other animals and is especially interested in chasing squirrels!  Some basic obedience training will help Eddie tremendously.  We've been told he is gentle with cats.

Eddie was born on November 1, 2009 and is in good health, up to date on vaccines and is neutered.  He weighs around 115 lbs.

To be considered for adopting Eddie please submit an adoption application to us via email.  He is being fostered in the Oakville area and his approved adopters will be required to pick him up in person.  An adoption donation of $500 applies.

Adopter Update: Molly, adopted April 2011

I thought you might like to know that she is an extremely happy, healthy, lovely dog, who is thriving and loving living at my house.

I have attached pictures taken on my blackberry over the past couple of years.  As I mentioned to you before, I live near Lake Ontario.  I take Molly to the lake as often as I can, and she loves jumping in the water and chasing the birds and having pets from passers-by.  Pictures above show her swimming with ducks, frolicking in the snow, and cooling off in the fountains at the Exhibition grounds.

I had a baby in October 2012, and Molly has adjusted well to having some competition.  Through the help of my brother and nanny, Molly still gets lots of walks, lots of pets, and probably gets even more attention now, with somebody home all day, than she did before, when I was at work.

Molly has no health issues, and, surprisingly, given her age, no grey or white hair at all.  She is mobile, active, and doesn’t look at day over 3 or 4 years old.  She still stops traffic when I take her out, and people come out of their cars and houses to walk over to her to give her pets and hugs.  She still doesn’t like other dogs, or cats (even worse), but her leash manners have improved dramatically from what they were before.  She is nowhere near perfect, but she functions well enough for a city dog.  She’ll never be a dog park socializer, but that’s fine – she’d rather be at the lake swimming.

That’s it for now.  I still read your website regularly, and enjoy hearing about all of these wonderful animals.

Thanks.

Adopter Update: Turbo (formerly known as Jack)

When we got Turbo he was only 72 lbs and now he is about 96 lbs and the vet says he is super healthy.  He loves to play pull with sticks and runs around very nicely with most dogs in our neighbourhood park. The funny beast does not like the water!  We really have to coax him to go swimming at the cottage.

Turbo started off as a huge puller, and I could barely control him. Now he is a great walker now and I just hold a very loose leash.  The only time he refuses to listen or behave is with squirrels.  They drive him bonkers.

Thank you for all the great work you do saving Newfs and for giving us our big messy boy!

Victor

Victor
2013-022
November 18, 2013 : Victor was adopted!

Handsome boy Victor arrived at Newf Friends on October 5 and is doing great at his foster home.  He is a sweet, gentle, playful boy who has excellent house manners and is a pleasure to spend time with.

Victor has made fast friends with the other Newf in his foster home and the two boys are having great fun playing together. He has wonderful doggie social skills around  other dogs and could happily join a family where he had another well mannered playmate.

Victor is 7 years young and came to us through no fault of his own.  He  was surrendered to his vet when his family was no longer able to provide the care he needed.  Victor has some ongoing minor orthopedic issues including arthritis in his front right shoulder and arthritis in his back-end. He is taking an nsaid for this and is able to get around just fine.  His mobility is not impacted and he is able to romp and play.  You'd never guess that he is 7!  He is neutered and his vaccines are up to date.

Victor is recovering from some skin infections and with TLC, grooming and good food we have seen great improvement.  His coat is a bit of a mess from being shaved in spots, but it will grow back in nicely now that his infections have been treated.

To be considered for adopting Victor please complete an adoption application and return it to us via email.  Victor is being fostered in the Paris, On area and his approved family will be required to pick him up in person.

A reduced adoption donation of $400 applies to offset the cost of  Victor's pain meds.

Tank

Tank
2013-020

Dec 8/14: Tank was adopted!

UPDATE: September 1, 2014
Tank continues to undergo therapy to recovery from surgery.  Come and visit him at NewfStock later this month!

UPDATE: April 9, 2014
Tank underwent hip replacement surgery and all went well.  He has several weeks of recovery and rehab ahead of him.  Thank you to everyone who donated towards his care!

This sweet boy arrived on September 30, 2013 as an owner surrender. He is settling in wonderfully at his foster home and is proving to be a gentle, loving Newf, fantastic with all the other dogs and cats at his foster home. See for yourself in the video below... he just met all those dogs 5 minutes before the video was filmed. What a sweet boy!

In this video Tank is with two 7-week old puppies; what a wonderful boy he is! As far as personalities go, you could not find a sweeter, calmer, more gentle boy than Tank. He is simply fantastic with every dog he encounters.

Just 2 years old, Tank has orthopedic issues with his backend, which is why he was surrendered. His owners loved him but could not afford to address his health issues. Tank requires surgery to replace his hips and we are running a fundraising campaign to raise the funds for his surgery and rehabilitation.

Details on how you can donate towards Tank's Happy Hips Fund are posted here  -  please support Tank!

In this video you can see Tank on his morning walk. Despite his hip/knee issues he does enjoy toodling around with the other dogs and likes to get out and enjoy nature, just not for super long walks!

Tank is neutered, up to date with vaccines and was born on July 10, 2011.
