ABOUT THIS BOOK...

A heartwarming, true story about George, a rescue dog who helps his owner rediscover love and happiness. Marley & Me meets Tuesdays with Morrie and The Art of Racing in the Rain--get your tissues ready, animal lovers!

After Colin Campbell went on a short business trip abroad, he returned home to discover his wife of many years had moved out. No explanations. No second chances. She was gone and wasn't coming back. Shocked and heartbroken, Colin fell into a spiral of depression and loneliness.

Soon after, a friend told Colin about a dog in need of rescue—a neglected 140-pound Newfoundland Landseer, a breed renowned for its friendly nature and remarkable swimming abilities. Colin adopted the traumatized dog, brought him home and named him George. Both man and dog were heartbroken and lacking trust, but together, they learned how to share a space, how to socialize, and most of all, how to overcome their bad experiences. At the same time, Colin relived childhood memories of his beloved grandfather, a decorated war hero and a man who gave him hope when he needed it most.

Then everything changed. Colin was offered a great new job in Los Angeles, California. He took George with him and the pair began a new life together on the sunny beaches around L.A. George became a fixture in his Hermosa Beach neighborhood, attracting attention and giving affection to everyone he met, warming hearts both young and old. Meanwhile, Colin headed to the beach to rekindle his love for surfing, but when George encountered the ocean and a surfboard for the first time, he did a surprising thing—he jumped right on the board. Through surfing, George and Colin began a life-altering adventure and a deep healing process that brought them back to life. As their story took them to exciting new heights, Colin learned how to follow George’s lead, discovering that he may have rescued George but that in the end, it was George who rescued him.

Free Days with George is an uplifting, inspirational story about the healing power of animals, and about leaving the past behind to embrace love, hope and happiness.

Junior

Junior
2015-009
August 21, 2015: I was adopted!

Junior will be joining his adoptive family in August once he has the all clear from his surgeon

Medical HOLD : On medical hold pending recovery from elbow surgery.  Expected adoption availability date of mid-August.

Handsome boy Junior arrived on April 19th and has been undergoing extensive behavioural and medical assessments.  He is doing very well and we have a clear plan of action to address his health needs.

All ready for swim season!
Born March 27, 2013 Junior is two years old.  His owner's allergies were not manageable so the decision was made to rehome him.

Junior lived as the only dog with his family, but he does get along with other dogs and has done very well meeting the dogs in his foster home.  He could happily join a family with another well socialized dog.   He  lived in a home with a cat so could join a family with a feline friend too.  What a good boy!

Junior knows some basic commands but needs work on leash manners. He has started to attend obedience classes with his foster mom and he has done very well.  Bravo Junior!

Junior has been vaccinated and neutered.  On June 25 he underwent arthroscopic surgery to remove "joint mice" from his elbows and we expect a full recovery and great improvement in his mobility.  This procedures gives him the very best chance at a long, happy, pain free life with good mobility. His mobility is not compromised at this time, but long term, he will be best suited to a home with few or no stairs.

Junior's foster mom has been working hard to socialize him and to make up for a lack of exposure to training opportunities in his life.  Junior hasn't had many opportunities to meet new people prior to arriving at Newf Friends so he can be spooky with introductions, and hand shy.  He is in the care of a fabulous foster mom who is helping him learn to trust people and to blossom into a wonderful boy. With a confident and experienced handler at his side, Junior is making steady progress.

He has been testing the limits in his foster home, seeing what he can get away with, including showing some mild resource guarding, all of which is easily corrected by his foster mom.  He responds very well to direction and has great potential with someone who has time to teach him the basics and build trust and confidence.  He is making steady progress already!  Junior is suited to an experienced owner and would not be suitable for a first time dog owner.

This sensitive boy is showing some moderate separation anxiety issues and we will be working to help him cope better with alone time. He shows great improvement daily.  Routine, structure and kindness are really paying off for this boy. His foster mom has made great strides with him in a short time!

He is being fostered in the Mississauga area.  His approved adopters will be required to pick him up in person. An adoption donation applies and will be determined once we know his long term training and health needs.

Sox

Sox
2015-007
October 8, 2015: I was adopted!

Happy girl Sox is looking for a fabulous family to call her own. She is a friendly Newf who loves people and gets along with everyone she meets.  She is looking for a home where she will gets lots of love and care. Her foster mom says, "She is UBER affectionate. With the slightest invitation she'll be at your feet for some cuddle time or flopped over for belly rubs."  :)

Sox and her brother Shoez came to us on April 11th after much careful thought and consideration by their loving owner.  Both dogs have been well loved and cared for, but many life changes beyond their owner's control made it apparent that Sox and Shoez were no longer having their needs met.  Their owner made the best choice for these two lovely dogs and entrusted Newf Friends with finding them loving homes.

Sox is a playful girl who was born on May 15, 2009 so is just about 6 years young.  She knows basic commands, including: sit, down, rollover, here, paw, leave it, stay, etc.  She is really bright and picks up training easily.  She excelled in her obedience course.  She would be a perfect match for someone interested in doing therapy work.

She is great when left home alone - she has no separation anxiety, she's not destructive, never gets into trouble, perfectly housetrained, etc.

Soz uses her voice sparingly (eg. doesn't alert bark),is really polite with house guests, big and small, human or canine.  She never jumps up, etc.  She seems fond of kids, enjoys being pet by them, etc. (she would knock over tiny kids though - goofy girl!)

Sox is great off leash in safe areas and has good recall. She keeps a close eye on her humans and never leaves your sight. She would be great for light hiking trails, etc.
An avid swimmer, Sox would love to find a family who will take her to the lake for lots of swim sessions!  She also loves to romp and play, so an equally active family would suit her well.  Her foster mom recommends at least an hour of exercise per day, but she is happy to do more.  She has no mobility issues at all, no hesitation getting up, etc.
First time out dock diving - look at her go!

Sox loves to play with other dogs and has excellent doggie social skills.  She greets calmly and plays very well,   She could live with a playful male or female dog, or would be equally happy being the only dog and soaking up all of the attention herself!

Her family tells us that she finds it difficult containing herself near cats or small animals, so she is best suited to a cat-free home.

Sox is spayed and is in good shape.  She has dropped quite a bit of weight since arriving in foster car, her fitness has improved and she is doing great!

She has been brought up to date on basic vaccines.  She is allergic to turkey, chicken and beef  but does well on other foods.  She has received regular vet care throughout her life, has been fed a healthy raw diet and has known much love. We have switched her over to a diet of Orijen 6 Fish and she is doing well on this.

Sox has an inverted vulva which makes her susceptible to irritation, hopefully as she continues to drop the excess pounds this will improve dramatically. Keeping the area clean and dry has cleared up all irritation and she is doing very well now.

Her foster mom says, " She is seriously awesome. Something about her loyal, loving and goofiness - she is really special.  She has these big soft eyes that make everyone feel very loved.   We have fostered  50 or so dogs and she is definitely one that will leave a mark. :)"

Sox is being fostered in the Ottawa area and her approved adopters will be required to pick her up in person.  We will consider homes within a one day drive of her location, including parts of Ontario, Quebec, and neighbouring States including NY, PA, NJ, VT and more.  An adoption donation of $500 applies.

Sox made her TV debut on Animal House Calls on June 2...here are some shots from the green room and the set:

Have a look at this cute video her foster family made!

Shoez

Shoez
2015-008

I WAS ADOPTED!

Lovable boy Shoez is looking for some loving from a great family.  This big, goofy fella' has loads of love to give!  He joined an adoptive family but after a few days they came to the conclusion that it just was not the right fit, so he is still available for adoption.

Shoez and his sister Sox came to us on April 11th after much careful thought and consideration by their loving owner.  Both dogs have been well loved and cared for, but many life changes beyond their owner's control made it apparent that Sox and Shoez were no longer having their needs met.  Their owner made the best choice for these two lovely dogs and entrusted Newf Friends with finding them loving homes.

Shoez is an affectionate boy who was born on January 16, 2010 so is just about 5 years young.  He is a happy boy with a goofy side and is social and loves spending time with people.  He knows basic commands and has nice house manners.  This boy is TALL so it's pretty easy for him to counter surf if there is a very tempting treat just sitting there calling to him!
He has been neutered and at the moment is in need of a weight loss program to shed some extra pounds.  Maintaining a lean physique is very important for Shoez!  He underwent surgery at 8 months and 12 months of age to correct issues with his elbows and made a full recovery.  He also underwent a hip replacement at 16 months. He has very good mobility now, and takes daily supplements to help keep his joints happy.

He can be a playful boy and likes to hop around and have fun, but he should not be allowed to over do it.  He is fine on stairs, but thinking long term, as with all Newfs, a home with few steps to go outside to his fenced yard would be ideal.  No worries about his mobility though  -- look at him playing with this ball!

Long walks are not enjoyable for Shoez, he would prefer a nice 15 min walk.  He loves to swim though and this is a great form of exercise for him that is easy on his joints.  A home with a pool or access to a pond or lake for swimming will benefit him greatly.  Shoez is sensitive to the heat, so a home with air conditioning is a must-have for him.

He has received regular, excellent vet care throughout his life, has been fed a healthy raw diet and has known much love. He is allergic to turkey and chicken but does well on other foods. We have transitioned him to Orijen 6 Fish kibble and he is doing well on this so if his adopters prefer to feed a kibble rather than raw diet this is a great option.

Shoez is playful with other respectful dogs and enjoys a fun romp with his pals.  Understandably he does not appreciate being jumped on and climbed all over though. He would be happy as the only dog, or joining a family with another respectful, well mannered dog.  A young, boisterous dog who is going to be all over him will not be a good fit for Shoez.

This handsome boy finds cats rather irresistible, so a cat free home is best.

Shoez is being fostered in the Bomanville area.  His approved adopters will be required to pick him up in person. We will consider applications from families within a 10 hour radius of his foster home which includes parts of Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, and neighbouring States including NY, PA, OH, NJ, VT and more.

Because of his need for daily supplements a reduced adoption donation of $350 applies.

Angus

Angus (now Finnegan!)
2015-006

ADOPTED Sept 10!
Adorable Finnegan arrived in our care on April 8th and had a great time meeting and playing with all of his new friends!

Finnegan is a sweet boy, typical young male, and is going to make one lucky family very happy.  He has been matched with a family from our waiting list.

Born April 3, 014 Finnegan is just a young boy.  Finnegan suffers from bilateral entropion and will remain on a foster-to-adopt placement until we have completed surgery for his eyes.  We have determined that it is in his best interest to only undergo one surgery, so we are delaying eye surgery until he is old enough to neuter.  Once his growth plates have closed we will proceed with surgery.

He may have a mild heart murmur as well, we will recheck in coming weeks as he settles into his foster-to-adopt home.
All groomed out and looking marvelous!

A little messy and in need of a grooming on intake!!!
