All about Tanner
This handsome boy is full of love and looking for a great family to call his own.  He is a quiet, well-mannered fella' who has very nice house manners, follows direction well and is a sweet Newf who is eager to please.

Tanner knows his basic commands and is a happy, easy-going boy.  His leash manners are coming along with a positive training approach.  He's an intelligent boy who is quick to learn, motivated to please, and would be a great candidate for obedience work, working dog activities like water rescue, draft work and more.

Tanner has been living with another sweet and mellow dog and Tanner has been friendly and appropriate with him. He is polite, curious, follows his new friend around and takes cues from him well. Good boy Tanner!

He has done well meeting other dog out on walks, although does get a bit excited -- he is eager to play!  Tanner should be fine living with another dog who is well mannered and non-reactive, and who might like to play nicely with him.

He has not been cat tested, but has shown a keen interest in squirrels! Silly boy.
He could potentially join a home with a dog savvy cat who has access to a dog free area in the house, and owners who are willing to put some work into his manners around the cat.
Tanner has not been exposed to young children.  He is a happy, goofy boy and does get excited when people come to visit, so a home without very young kids is best.  He is improving in his manners greeting people in foster care, but still has some work to do.

Tanner is healthy and up to date on vaccines and neutered.  His blood work was good. He is ready to join an adoptive home now.
He is being fostered in Thornhill, ON.  His approved adopters will be required to pick him up in person.  An adoption donation of $500 will apply.

To be considered for adopting a dog through Newf Friends please submit a completed application, which can be found on the CONTACT US/FORMS page. Before completing an application or emailing us with questions, please review our FAQ page.  As outlined on our FAQ page, applicants who do not meet our adoption requirements (ie. no fenced play area, living in an apartment building, having young children, etc.) will not be considered -- please do not email us asking us to make an exception.

All About Odin:

This adorable ball of fluff was surrendered to us on February 4 so he could be treated for issues with his eye. Odin underwent surgery to remove his eye on March 22.  The surgery went well and he has made a full recovery.  Lab reports came back showing that the gluacoma was caused by anterior segment dysgenesis.

Odin, March 23 recovering after surgery

Odin is a very confident pup who is full of beans and loves to explore and get himself into all sorts of trouble.  He is proving himself to be very bright and quick to learn and is a typical mischievous, cheeky puppy.  He's a little trouble maker with a big attitude!

He is a country bumpkin who loves to romp and play in the woods, finding every muddy puddle, swimming every chance he gets, and generally getting himself good and dirty all the time.  He is going to be a big, drooling, hairy boy who is not for the house proud!

He is a very affectionate pup who enjoys being hugged, petted, groomed, and loved. Once he is done playing, he likes to curl up on a cozy dog bed or the couch and get belly rubs, and hugs.  He's a love-bug!

A family that has the time to properly train and socialize a young pup will be the best fit for Odin.  His big personality and accompanying big size will require that he be given proper training and socialization as a pup to ensure that he matures into a well-mannered adult.

Given his very strong personality, he will be best suited to a giant-breed savvy family who is familiar with the training needs of Saint Bernards.  First-time dog owners or families who are not familiar with giant working breeds are not a match for him.

He would be a great fit for someone who is looking for a dog to work in obedience, draft work (once old enough), and other activities to harness his energy and focus him on positive activities.

Odin is a very mouthy pup and since he was removed from his litter at 7.5 weeks of age, it was essential that he have a lot of exposure to other dogs to help him learn bite inhibition.  He has joined a foster home with several other dogs and is getting exposure to canine companions of all ages and sizes, as well as farm animals.  He has been making great progress but still has much to learn.

Continued exposure to a variety of properly socialized dogs will be very important for Odin as he matures.

Odin has a stubborn streak and is a very bold, pushy pup.  He will do best in an environment with structure and a no-nonsense owner who is committed to working on specific training techniques to ensure he develops into a well balanced dog.

He is playful and enjoys being in the company of other dogs.  He will romp and play for hours, wrestling and playing tug with toys. He is a rough and tumble boy, so play sessions with a dog who is equally playful and is of the appropriate age and size to play with Odin is the right fit for him.  Small, fragile or senior dogs are not a good pairing with this young, strong, boy.

Odin has been showing some resource guarding since he was a very young pup.  His foster family have worked hard on overcoming this, and Odin has made much progress, but does still have the tendency to guard very high value items like food.  If he were to join a home with another dog, the owner would have to be very experienced in managing a household with a dog who shows RG behaviours.  In a home without another dog, this will be less of an issue, but will still need to be worked on continually.

He is learning to interact nicely with cats, and could join a home with a dog savvy feline who doesn't mind puppy breath.  He will steal the cats food!

Does it get any cuter?  One of Odin's foster brothers was enjoying a nap in the snow and Odin decided to curl up with him for a snuggle.  So cute!  He loves to cuddle with the other dogs at his foster home (and also chase their tails, nibble their faces, and generally pester them!)

We are socializing Odin with children to ensure that he is well mannered and respectful around kids when he encounters them. Having said that, he can be a fairly grabby pup and he has shown an inclination to be protective of certain resources (highly desirable food/objects).  For this reason he is not suited to a home where children are around.  His foster parents are working hard to address this behaviour, but it will be something that will need to be managed life-long.

Odin is being fostered in the Bancroft, ON area; his approved adopters will be required to pick him up in person.

US adopters will not be considered due to vaccination requirements to cross the border. Odin is too young to receive the rabies vaccine, so can not cross the border.  We do not administer this vaccine until pups are 6 months of age, and there is a 30 day waiting period before he would be able to cross the border.  Please do not email us asking us to hold Odin for you until he is 7 months of age, we will not consider this option.

A securely fenced yard is required.  We do not place young pups into homes where they will be left home alone for more than 4 hours per day.

An adoption donation of $550 will apply, plus a refundable $250 neuter-security deposit which will be reimbursed once he is neutered at the appropriate age (24 months of age for a giant breed male) as per our spay/neuter contract.
