Adopter Update - Kyle

Hi Sandra,

I just wanted to provide a little update on Kyle. Kyle has fit into our family perfectly, he is gentle around the kids, but enjoys his romps at the dog park immensely. Kyle has made a lot of friends around the neighbourhood, people and canine and due to his size everyone can see him coming!

Kyle's has an amazing temperament and acts appropriately regardless of the situation. Kyle became fast friends with his new step brother Sunny they just love to hang out and wrestle.

Here are some pictures of Kyle settling in to his new furever home. Thank you for allowing Kyle to join our family!

Update - January 26, 2011

Newf Friends volunteers have been busy as ever these last few days - here's the latest update...

Molly, a beautiful 6 year old girl will be arriving in our foster program this Sunday. Details to come soon.

Handsome Bear, a loving 8 year old boy, is now smiling after having lots of matts removed, getting a much needed bath, having his ear infections treated and getting some pain meds. He is feeling frisky, his tail is wagging, and this lovable fella' will be ready to find a perfect home just as soon as we finish getting him all cleaned up and groomed out.

Lovable pup Harold is responding to the TLC he is receiving in foster care. He has already gained 6 lbs! Harold's hair is growing in, his legs are correcting, and he is on the road to recovery. This sweet boy is a real love bug, gets along with everyone, and is going to bring so much joy to a loving family.

Sweet Lily has safely arrived in her new foster home where she will get some one-on-one attention to help her learn all about new things. Given the lack of socialization Lily and her sister Penelope have had, it was in their best interest to place them into separate foster homes to help them gain confidence in the company of two different packs of well socialized, confident dogs. This shy, gentle girl will be having her spay surgery tomorrow.

Lily's sister Penelope is also settled into a foster home with a large pack of dogs to help build her confidence and teach her all sorts of new things. She has been going out with her foster family to meet new people and be exposed to new things. She's making progress! She will be spayed and have laser surgery to correct bilateral cherry eye, on Feb 1.

Sassy girl Mackenzie is recovering well from surgery. She has a follow-up vet appointment this Friday to have her spay sutures removed and to assess the success of her cherry eye surgery. Updates to come!

Charlie has a lot to smile about! He has been adopted into a fantastic family and is happy as can be! Congratulations Charlie!

Another happy ending, Ruby is pictured here with her new sister Koda. Congratulations Ruby on finding an amazing family to love you forever!

Speaking of amazing families -- Koda and Ruby's family are featured on our Kids that Care website! Thank you Eugenie, Esten and Milo!

It's raining puppies, of all breeds! Our parent group HART has puppies, puppies and more puppies available for adoption. If you know of any loving families who are looking to adopt a pup, please direct them to HART!

Adopter Update - Jake - Jan, 2011

Update from Jake, who was adopted a few weeks ago: "Jake is doing just great, has learned the invisible fence boundaries, and is Clara's constant companion/rival/muse. They eat, sleep, play, patrol, and hunt (moles) together. I bought Jake a "Mammoth" bed which is actually a tad small, but it doesn't really matter as Clara claimed it anyway."

Penelope Needs a Special Family

Penelope, ID 3606
May 9, 2011: Penelope was adopted.

Say hello to Penelope the Landseer, a very special girl born November 22, 2009. This beautiful girl came into our care January 16, 2011 when her owner surrendered her and her sister Lily due to unforeseen life changes. She is looking for a kind, gentle family to give her lots of loving and to help her mature into a happy, confident dog.

In a nutshell, Penelope is incredibly playful, affectionate and active with people she knows. At her foster home, where she knows all the people and dogs, she acts like any other well socialized dog; playing, running, being a goof, loving to receive attention. Her shyness appears when a new person comes to visit. She will "lay low" for a few hours and then come around at her own pace. She is not shy with new dogs on her own turf; it's just new people that make her want to hide. Keep reading to learn her full story.

Prior to coming to us, Penelope and her sister lived an isolated, sheltered life and were not given proper opportunities to get out and explore the world, so everything they see is new to them. Penelope needs to take her time when meeting new people, animals, or experiencing new things. Her foster family has been working hard to socialize her and have been taking her out and exposing her to different situations. Penny is hesitant and fearful with new situations, so it takes patient coaxing to get her to try new things – a few treats seem to help the process and she is never unpleasant in the process, just timid. Sometimes when fearful Penny will bark nervously and attempt to flee. This is all typical behaviour of a dog who spent all of her time at one location, and was never given proper opportunities for socialization.

Penny's ideal family will be with people who are willing to take some time to socialize her with people and other dogs and teach her all of the things she should have learned in the first few months of her life. Still a young pup at 17 months, she has much learning to do and great potential. Patience, kindness, and lots of treat rewards will help Penny blossom into a happy, confident girl.
Penelope loves to roam & explore outside

Once she gets to know a dog, look out... she's an avid mouth wrestler!
Penelope is VERY active and needs vigourous daily activity to burn her energy off. She loves the outdoors and also going for walks/hikes. She has a wonderful time on her foster family's property... running, cavorting, bounding around, playing with sticks and of course eating snow (as Newfs like to do). Initially, she was shy with the other dogs but she now actively runs, explores, plays and wrestles with all of them. When she first meets new dogs, she's a bit shy but it doesn't take her long to realize that a new dog = someone she can possibly play with. She is an absolute playing machine and she loves to wrestle, chase, tackle, be chased and cavort with other dogs - doesn't matter the size or gender, she's not picky... if it's a dog, she'll try and play with it! She literally spends hours a day just playing and wrestling with the other dogs at her foster home. Penelope needs to go to a home with another young, playful dog for her to have fun with. Her doggie companion should be confident, well mannered and well socialized to act as a role model for her.

She does have a tendency to chase/try to play with cats and small dogs, so she would not be suitable for a house with either (unless her adoptive family was prepared for this behaviour and the work required to correct it).  Pen will be assessed further but initially it seems she may not be best in a home with young children as the unpredictable boisterousness causes her distress.

Penelope LOVES TO PLAY with TOYS!!!! She will play with anything and takes enjoyment in toys of all kinds: balls, squeaky things, ropes, stuffed dog toys... you get our drift. Penelope LOVES to play, is very animated and is a tremendous goof ball with her toys. She makes her foster parents laugh every day with her antics and they think she's the most playful dog they've ever fostered. She is also a great fetcher; she brings the ball right back and drops it in your hand or in front of you, ready for the next throw.
Wrestling is one of her favourite things to do

Penelope loves to play chase!

Pooped out after playing & wrestling
She is receiving work on basic obedience while in foster care but it will be important for her adoptive family to consider formalized training as this will help her bond with her new family. In foster care she has been a quick study and has learned sit, down, wait, come, move on and stay. Her leash manners are now excellent and she happily walks beside you without pulling. Her foster Mom has been walking her coupled to a confident dog and this has been instrumental in her confidence building while out and about.

Penelope had bilateral cherry eye that her owner left untreated for several months. Newf Friends had laser surgery done on February 1st to correct this condition; at the same time Penny was also spayed. The procedures went well and she has completely recovered from surgery in foster care. She is ready to join her new family now.

Like her sister Lily, Penny was extremely underweight upon intake, weighing only 56 lbs. Given proper food and nutrition in her foster home she is putting on weight and will reach her target weight within a few months. She is small framed and will be a small Newf once she reaches a healthy weight, probably in the 80 lbs range. As of April 10th, Pen had gained 18 lbs; she's looking great!

Penelope, like her sister Lily, has an obsession with food and gets very excited at meal time. In foster care, she is being taught to be respectful of other dogs around food and has made very good progress. Initially she would barge in and gobble up the other dogs food (from right under their noses!). Now she doesn't bother the other dogs while they eat and waits her turn. She sits prettily and will only eat when given the ok. How's that for nice manners!

This lovely girl is looking for a home with calm, patient people willing to spend the time to socialize her and able to look at the long picture and see her for her potential. As she builds her confidence through continued socialization, she will blossom into a happy and loving companion.

An adoption donation of $500 applies. Penelope is in foster care in the Guelph, Ontario area. Her approved adopters will be required to pick her up in person.

Lily is Looking for a Family

Lily
ID 3607

March 13, 2011: Lily was adopted.

Sweet Lily is looking for the perfect family to show her how great life can be. She and sister Penelope entered our rescue program on January 16, 2011 when their owner could no longer care for them.

Born on November 22, 2009, Lily is a young beautiful Newfoundland with loads of promise and potential in the loving care of the right family.

Lily has a wonderful, gentle disposition, is affectionate and wants nothing more than to curl up and rest her chin in her foster guardian's lap. She is gentle and loving, loves to be hugged and petted and is a real sweetheart.

Having not had appropriate opportunities to be properly socialized and exposed to the world prior to entering our program, Lily is fearful of unknown people, dogs, children, sounds, environments… basically anything new (which is pretty much everything for her!). When she’s scared she tends to curl up and try to hide under furniture or in corners.

She needs an owner that understands her needs and will be patient and give her lots of time to blossom. She has been making steady progress in foster care, improving every day and with the right owner, she will continue to blossom. She is a curious girl, and in her own time does explore new things. Following the lead of the confident dogs in her foster home, she is already coming out of her shell.
Once she is comfortable in her environment and with the people around her, she absolutely loves attention and is very social and friendly. She is more than happy to hop on the couch for snuggles and loves her silky black coat to be stroked softly. She loves to give big Newfy kisses too!

Health wise: She is currently severely underweight, weighing only 60 lbs upon intake! In foster care she has been put on a high quality food (Orijen) and has already gained several pounds. She is fine boned and we don’t expect her to be a large Newf as her build is small, but we expect her to reach a healthy weight in the 80 lb range within the next few months.

Her recent blood work shows that she is anemic but now that she is receiving a proper diet this should be resolved soon.

Lily was vaccinated upon intake and she was spayed on January 27th and is recovering in her foster home. She did have vaginitis that appears to have been a long standing, chronic condition. The results of the tests show the infection is a very nasty E. coli infection and she is now on antibiotics to treat this.

She is a young, active dog and needs daily vigorous activity to be happy and healthy. She loves to run in the woods; romping through the underbrush and bounding through the snow. You should see her go! Initially at her foster home when she met the other dogs she was overwhelmed, but now she is great friends with them, loving to romp and play, and then curl up together in a big pile of dogs to nap in the evenings. She is friendly with cats but needs to learn not to chase them when they run. She thinks they want to play… silly girl!

Because Lily grew up with other dogs, she needs to go to a home that has a friendly, well mannered dog to keep her company and also be a good role model. She greatly enjoys the companionship of other dogs .

Her adoptive family will want to enroll her in obedience training as she’s developed some bad habits and is ill mannered at times. She has been discovered standing on her foster family’s dining room table and other places a well mannered Newf shouldn’t be. She has a pesky habit of jumping up when she wants attention and she thinks climbing her foster Mom's back is a fun game. She responds well to direction and is improving greatly already.

Lily also never walked on a leash before entering foster care. Needless to say, her foster family is working on getting some basics down but Lily will need continued work. Time, established routines and patience will work wonders for this sweet girl. She takes direction well and is highly treat motivated so teaching her manners and obedience is not be a problem.

Lily is a young girl who hasn’t had the benefit of training or socialization (think of her as a really big puppy!). She is a wonderful girl with a beautiful personality; sweet, loving, eager to please and gentle. She just needs a family that will take the time socialize her and allow her to learn that life is great… that she doesn’t have to hide. Once she's properly socialized and completely out of her shell, she will be an absolutely fantastic girl for a very lucky family.

Lily will be ready to join a family in a few weeks time, around the second week of February, once she has completely healed from her spay surgery.

An adoption donation of $500 applies.

Update - January 19, 2011

Things have not slowed down the last few days and we have yet another new addition to the Newf Friends rescue program.

Meet Bear, a sweet and friendly 8 year old male who was turned over to us last night. He will be getting settled into a foster home this week and the enormous job of grooming him out will begin. Details will follow.

Penelope and Lily, aka The Dynamic Duo, have landed in foster care and are getting settled. These 14 month old sisters are in need of some vet care including spay surgery, and Penelope (the landseer) will require corrective surgery for cherry eye in both eyes.
These adorable girls are in need of extensive socialization and training. Both are fearful in new situations and need to learn basic obedience, basic commands and house manners (ahem, Lily, we mean YOU!)
We will be separating the girls and placing them into two different foster homes because they tend to increase each others anxiety, and they both need some directed one-on-one work to help socialize them.
Bios will be posted shortly.

7 month old Harold is settling into his foster home and doing great. He is a lovable, gentle, well mannered boy. Treatments for his chronic skin issues have begun, but he has a long road to recovery ahead of him. Test results should be arriving today. His bio can be read here.

Mackenzie is doing well recovering from her spay and cherry eye surgery. Her spay incision looks terrific, and her eye is healing well so far. Fingers and paws crosed that she will not need another surgery! This adorable girl is full of love and is a happy, gentle, playful girl that wants a family to call her own. Read her bio to learn more about her!

Charlie is doing great in his foster home, all healed up from neuter surgery and ready to join a new family. We have a possible home for him, pending a successful home visit tonight. Update to follow. Charlie's bio can be found here.

Ruby the love bug is all healed up from her life saving emergency surgery. She has an adoption pending, joining her new family on Thursday. Lucky girl!

We are rapidly using up our funds paying for the extensive medical needs of the dogs that have come into our program. Donations will be desperately needed to help us cover the costs of surgery for our new arrivals. To donate please visit HART's Canada Helps page and when making your donation state in the message section that the donation is for the Newf Friends Fund.

Mackenzie has been adopted!

Meet Mackenzie, a beautiful 4 year old CKC registered Newf who is looking for a very special family to call her own. Gentle and affectionate, this sweetheart wants nothing more than to be loved and cared for. She's going to make one lucky family very happy!
Mac is a great girl. Very eager to receive attention and affection, Mac sticks close to people and wants to stay with them. A real sweetie, she loves to give kisses and be hugged--a true gentle Newf temperament. She likes to be around kids, and now that she has learned some manners, could go to a dog savvy home with well mannered children who have dog experience.

She knows basic commands, has excellent off lead recall, and is an easy going gal.
She likes other dogs, and likes to romp and play with them once she gets to know them. She is playful and affectionate, and gets along with most dogs she meets, although she still needs to work on her doggie social skills when first meeting new dogs. An adoptive home where she would have the company of another well socialized dog would be very good for Mac.
She's also good with cats! Here's a video of Mac and the cat at her foster home. Sweet!

Her foster guardians have made tremendous progress with Mac's training, and in the hands of an experienced, confident owner she will continue to thrive. She can use some more work on her leash manners, but is otherwise terrific. She's calm and quiet in the house, easy to get along with, a really great girl!

We have worked with Mackenzie (affectionately known as Macaroni) to help resolve her health issues. This gorgeous girl entered our program in September and for the last 4 months we have been working hard to get her healthy and ready to join a loving adoptive home. She should be ready to be adopted in early February. You can read all about Mac's journey to good health here.
She has been spayed, vaccinated, and had corrective surgery for cherry eye. She is in good health now and is loving life! She takes Metacam (an NSAID) to keep her pain free from hip dysplasia, and with a once a day dose she is able to run, play, swim, wrestle with other dogs and enjoy an excellent quality of life. Her mobility is not significantly limited at all.
If you think Mac would be a good fit for your family, please complete an adoption application to begin the process.
