Diesel

Diesel
2014 - 007

May 6, 2014:  I was adopted!

Say hello to Diesel, a goofy and lovable boy who arrived in our care on March 16.   This friendly boy gets along with everyone he meets and is just a big love bug.

Diesel was surrendered to us with his sister Bella when their loving owner had changes in their life and could no longer provide the level of care that these wonderful dogs require.  It is clear that Diesel and Bella were very well loved.

This sweet boy lived with another Newf and would be happy to join a home with another well mannered, mellow dog.  He plays well with other dogs and is friendly and social, although he would be best in a home without a dominant male who would challenge him.

Diesel was born on December 14, 2010 and is a happy, healthy fella.  His vaccines are UTD and he will be neutered shortly.

Diesel is being fostered in the Bancroft area.  An adoption donation of $500 applies.

Bella

Bella
July 6: I was adopted!

Pretty gal Bella arrived at Newf Friends on March 16th and is doing very well at her foster home.

Bella was surrendered to us with her brother Diesel when their loving owner had changes in their life and could no longer provide the level of care that these wonderful dogs require.  It is clear that Diesel and Bella were very well loved.

A happy girl, Bella loves to romp and play, and isn't above getting herself all dirty in puddles!  She is a sweet girl who will make a great companion for someone looking to have fun with their dog.

Bella is a friendly gal who loves people and enjoys getting lots of attention.   She lived with another Newf and gets along with well mannered dogs.  She could happily join a home with another well socialized dog.

Bella was born on October 25, 2009 and is a healthy 4 year old girl. She has been spayed and her vaccines ave been brought up to date.

She is a smart girl and would be a great candidate for working dog activities.  She knows her basic commands and will also open and close drawers on command, rings a bell to go outside, knows some basic carting commands like backing up and is eager to learn more!

Bella is being fostered in Kanata and her approved adopters will be required to pick her up in person.  An adoption donation of $500 applies.

100 Items in 100 Days

It's March Break and once again 9 year old Ty and 7 year old Riley are kicking off another amazing project!  These boys are so awesome!

You may recall that last year the boys pledged to collect 100 toys in 100 days, and not only did they meet that goal, but they far exceeded it!  Thanks to Ty and Riley, and our generous donors and supporters, all of Newf Friends and HART's fosters have toys to play with at their foster homes!

This year the boys are looking for donations of other much needed items: leashes, collars and dog beds!  The items are shared between Newf Friends and the all breed rescue HART that we operate under.

If you would like to help the boys out by donating a collar, leash or dog bed there are a few ways you can donate:

  • To drop items off in person within Ontario, email us to find a volunteer near you
  • Items or gift cards can be mailed to Newf Friends at PO Box 1139 Bancroft, ON K0L 1C0 Canada
  • Cash donations to go towards the boys purchasing the items themselves can be sent to us by clicking the Donate button at the top of the page, just put a comment that the funds are for the 100 items in 100 days drive.

A big thank you once again to Ty and Riley for being not only great fosters to so many animals in need, but for being fantastic volunteers who go above and beyond to help out rescued animals.  You boys are the best!

Adopter Update - Blue

Blue sure has come a long way from a life of living outside as a brood bitch. She joined her new family at the beginning of February and is doing FABULOUS!

Blue's Mom reports that Blue has been fantastic with all people and that she and her Newf sister Layla got along from the moment they met. They do everything together and there have been zero issues (you may recall that Blue had issues with other dogs when she first came into rescue**). We couldn't be happier for Blue and look forward to more updates!!

Walking with her Mom & sister Layla
Stroll on a beach with Dad & Layla

Cuddle time
Snooze time
Playing with her sister!

See those 2 lumps? Blue & Layla enjoying the snowfall

Exciting News!

We are very excited to announce our new project called the
Breeder Referral Program.
Our goal with this project is to give potential puppy purchasers easy access to a list of available pups from responsible breeders.

We will be maintaining an up-to-date list of  Newfoundland Dog breeders across Canada who are members of the Newfoundland Dog Club of Canada (NDCC) and who have pups available, or expect to have pups available within the next year.

This breeder referral program goes hand in hand with our ongoing education campaign to help  future Newf owners find their way to good breeders and avoid being tricked by lousy BYB and puppy producers.

and please spread the word that a list of current and upcoming Newf litters in Canada is now available!

Dori

Dori
2014-005

February 14, 2014:  Dori has been adopted!

Pretty little Landseer Dori arrived in our care on February 1st and is getting settled in her foster home.

This 3 year old girl came to us through no fault of her own when her owner was no longer able to keep her.

She is a friendly gal who gets along well with other dogs and is fine around cats.  She apparently likes to chase chickens so is not suited to a home where she would have access to free range birds.

She is housebroken and is able to be left home alone without issues.  In the coming days we will be assessing Dori in foster care to learn more about her manners and training.

Dori is on the small side, around 100 lbs.   We are told she had a litter of pups a few months ago but her breeding days are over now and we will have her spayed before adoption.

She is being fostered in the Oakville area.  Her approved adopters will be required to pick her up in person.  An adoption donation of $500 applies.

Adopter Update: Louis

Hi Sandra, hope all is well with you.  Just wanted to provide you with an update that you could put on the site!

Louis has adjusted very well to his forever home. We could not ask for a more loving and well  behaved boy. He is a fine example of the sweet temperament that is the Newfoundland. ‎His hair has now grown back into a fine Newf mane, and he passed his grooming last week with flying colours!

He goes to his doggie daycare twice weekly, which he gets very excited about! Lou also looks forward to his walks each evening and anytime he sees anyone or another dog his tail wags happily. I also take him on his weekly hike through the forest once or twice a week and he is a real trooper, I'm not sure who enjoy's it more, him or myself?

He has a bit of arthritis in his back leg but he seems to deal with it well, and the Glucosamine/ Acana Pacifica diet is I'm sure a huge help!

We cannot wait to see if he's a water lover this spring/summer ‎here on the lake!

Thank you to Newf Friends for bringing Louis into our lives, we could not imagine life without him.

Tank Update - Jan 31, 2014

A great update on Tank!!

From his rehab vet: "Tank is progressing well with his rehab – he has gained 3 cm and 2 cm of thigh muscle on his left and right hind legs respectively (we’ve been working more on his left as that leg was smaller in regard to muscle mass initially – so the legs are becoming more equal). This is good progress, and I expect it to continue!"

Here's a video of Tank working hard in the hydrotherapy tank. Fabulous!!

At this week's hydrotherapy session Tank did 24 minutes in the tank with 8 sprints. He then went to PetSmart where he had a great time; lots of attention and loving from all ages... the kids loved him. He continues to do exercises at home and is making progress with weight loss too. Next week he goes for x-rays and hopefully we can set a date for surgery with the orthopedic surgeon. Paws crossed for this loveable guy!

We are still continuing to fund raise for Tank, as he does need both hips done. If you'd like to contribute towards his care please visit our Canada Helps page at https://www.canadahelps.org/dn/2969.  We are a division of HART and a tax receipt will be issued for your kind donation.  Please select TANK's HAPPY HIPS from the drop down menu to direct your donation specifically to Tank!

Together we can make Tank's hips happy and give him the life he deserves!
