All about Lacey

Lovely gal Lacey arrived in our care on November 17th and has settled into her foster home very well.

Lacey knows a few commands and her foster family are working on teaching her more of the basics. She is a bright girl who is eager to please and she is picking up new commands quickly.

Lacey is very much like a puppy still! Her house manners are ok, except for attempted counter cruising!   Her leash manners could use some spiffing up as well, her foster family are working on this and making great strides.   Adopters who are willing to put in some work around obedience training will be best for her.

She is an active girl who has fairly high energy and will be well suited to owners who are interested in getting out and being active with her, working her mind and body to meet her enthusiasm!  She's a spunky gal!

She is said to gets along well with other large dogs, happily living with another Newf before coming to our program, and is doing well with her foster brother.  A very well socialized large or giant breed dog who plays nicely would be a good fit as a playmate for Lacey.

Having said that, Lacey does have prey drive issues and is not reliable around small breed dogs or cats in her home.  Her surrendering family reported that she is fine walking by small breed dogs while out on leash though.  (Further assessment pending.)  After Lacey's owner passed away earlier this year, Lacey moved in with her owner's daughter.   Despite several months of work, Lacey could not be left with the resident small breed dog reliably.  Due to Lacey's prey drive homes with cats or small-breed dogs will not be considered.  She is also not a candidate for dog parks.

Lacey would be happiest in a home where she will not be left for long hours every day.  A few hours a day would be fine, but she is very people focused and will not be happy being left long days alone.

Further details about Lacey will be posted as we get to know her.

All about Buford

What a catch!  This handsome fella' is a new arrival in our program and is settling into his foster home nicely.  He came to us through no fault of his own when changes in his owner's life necessitated that he be rehomed.   Buford has been loved greatly throughout his life and it really shows.  He is a wonderful Newf who will make one lucky family so very happy.

Buford is well mannered, knows basic commands, gets along with everyone, and is a real gem!  He loves to have a job to do and would be a great match for someone looking for a Newf to do therapy work with.
Gentle with other dogs, Buford could happily join a family with another four-footed pal.

He is UTD on vaccines, neutered and appears to be in good health.

An adoption donation will apply.

2018-014

ADOPTED!

Quick Adoption Overview
DOB April 10, 2010
Located in Oakville, ON
Good with dogs and cats
Fenced yard required
Before applying to adopt a dog or emailing us with questions, please read the dog's entire bio and review our FAQ page.  Emails asking questions that are answered on that page will not be responded to.

Fresh from the groomer, Max is enjoying chest scratches!

All about Max

Sweetie-pie max arrived in our care on October 20 and is making himself right at home in his foster home.  He is a well-mannered boy who has excellent house manners, knows basic commands and is eager to please.

This love-bug gets along with everyone he meets, including dogs and cats.  He could join a home with another four-footed pal, or would be equally happy to be the only dog in the family.

At 150 lbs Max needs to drop several pounds which will help give him more energy and enable him to get around better.  He loves to go swimming so this will be a great exercise to help shed those extra pounds and build his muscle!

Max is neutered and current on vaccines.  He is currently being treated for ear and eye infections and will be ready to be adopted once we have those cleared up.  Applications are now being accepted.

Because Max is a senior, a reduced adoption donation of $350 applies.

Stella

Stella
2018-013

I was adopted on July 7/19!

Quick Adoption Overview
DOB October 2013

Before applying to adopt a dog or emailing us with questions, please read the dog's entire bio and review our FAQ page.  Emails asking questions that are answered on that page will not be responded to.

All about Stella
Stella arrived in our care on October 11 and has been undergoing treatment for bilateral knee ruptures. After 8 months in foster care and multiple surgeries, we are thrilled to announce that she is fully healed and ready to start her new life! Hooray!

She is a friendly gal who is well-mannered and loves meeting new people and getting showered with attention.  The more lovin' the better for this gal!

She has excellent house manners, is calm, quiet and respectful. Stella knows several commands, has excellent leash manners, great off-lead recall, and is an all around easy going gal.  She greets everyone with a wagging tail, and occasionally their shoe in her mouth!  Silly Stella!

She is an adorable girl who loves to carry stuffies around and will happily lay on her bed and gently play with her toys.  She adores children and loves to lounge around and be petted, groomed and loved.

Stella is a happy girl who takes her role as squirrel patrol officer very seriously.  No squirrels in the bird feeders when this gal is on duty!

She gets along well with most other dogs but has a preference for hanging out with male dogs over females.  In her foster home, Stella lives with 4 males and 1 other mellow female and gets along with all of them, although she can be the fun-police at times! She's had numerous visiting dogs come and go from her foster home and has enjoyed the company of most of them, with the exception of bossy females.

Her greeting style can be a bit pushy for some dogs, so an owner who will continue to work with Stella on this will be best.  She likes to romp and play with other dogs and is best suited to a playmate who has a mellow, gentle play-style.

She can guard her food a bit (from other dogs only, never from people) but is easily redirected with a verbal command.  In her foster home, she will wait calmly with the other dogs during their meal prep, then eats in a separate area just to ensure there are no issues.  She does not guard toys or any other items.

One month post-op for surgery #1 and doing very well!
If she were to join a family with another dog, an easy-going male would be the best match.  She would also be equally happy being the only dog and keeping all of the attention for herself!

Stella has been respectful around the farm animals at her foster home, even watching politely as chickens run around her.  What a good girl.

5 weeks post-op from her first surgery, out for her morning stroll
Healthwise, she has been spayed, is current on vaccines and her bloodwork is great.  Unfortunately, on intake Stella had bilateral ruptured cruciate ligaments.  We have now completed surgery on both of her knees, she is fully healed,  and her mobility is great.  She does have some arthritis in her shoulders but does not require pain meds at this time. She does take a joint supplement daily.

June 2019-All healed and ready to go!

Stella is a really great catch and will make a fabulous companion for the right family.  Maybe yours?

All about Zoe
Sweet and sensitive gal Zoe arrived in our care on June 28 after her owner's passing. She is getting herself settled and so far is proving to be a wonderful Newf.  She is well mannered, gentle and friendly, a real gem!

Looking cute as can be after a close trim to address skin issues
Zoe's vet care has begun, and her mobility is good with no orthopedic issues.   She is currently overweight and needs to drop about 15 lbs.  Her initial thyroid results show her levels sitting at "low normal" so a full thyroid panel has been done to determine if she needs meds.  Updates to follow.

Zoe arrived with a very full coat and lots of dry, itchy, irritated skin.  She has been clipped down to facilitate treatment of her bacterial skin issues that are over a significant part of her body.  Topical and oral treatment has been started to clear up her skin and ear issues and we hope to have her feeling loads better very soon.

Zoe is a very sweet girl who gets along well with other dogs and could happily join a family with another four-footed pal for her to play with.

ADOPTION PENDING

Quick Adoption Overview
DOB October 12, 2012
Located in Guelph, ON
Fenced yard required
Before applying to adopt a dog or emailing us with questions, please read the dog's entire bio and review our FAQ page.  Emails asking questions that are answered on that page will not be responded to.

All about Maia

Sweet Maia is a gentle, mellow gal who found herself in our care through no fault of her own. She has nice manners, is friendly and affectionate, and doesn't have a mean bone in her body.

This cutie gets along nicely with other dogs and could happily join a home with another four-footed pal.  She is also good with cats.  Such a great gal she is!

Maia arrived in our care quite overweight and in significant pain due to an untreated knee injury.  Skin issues prevented us from considering surgery for her for several months while we dealt with her skin and worked on weight loss.  Her skin is now in excellent shape and she is free of infections.

Maia had a negative reaction to some anti-inflammatory medication she was taking for her knee.  This med compromised her liver function.  We ran extensive diagnostics on Maia's liver and worked with a team of specialists to get her condition under control.  We are now thrilled to report that Maia's liver values are back to normal!  We are discontinuing her liver medication and she is expected to have no further issues.  We will recheck her bloodwork in late July to confirm that all is well, just to be sure, but do not anticipate any issues.  If Maia is adopted before her recheck, we will cover the cost of her bloodwork for her adoptive family.

Maia's knee issues have been ongoing for many years and in consultation with a team of veterinarians and rehab specialists, it was determined that given the scar tissue that has developed, putting Maia through invasive surgery to repair the knee will not give her any improved mobility compared to using no-surgical treatments.  Maia has been going to rehab and doing prescribed exercises at her foster home and she has improved dramatically!  These exercises, coupled with significant weight loss have made a world of difference for this sweet gal.  She is pain-free, has greatly improved mobility and muscle mass, and continues to improve by leaps and bounds.

Moving forward Maia's needs will be as follows:

Maia will continue to do exercises at home (her foster mom is a vet tech and can show her adopters how to do the exercises).  Keeping her at a lean body weight and continuing to support strong muscles will be the key to her long-term mobility and happiness.

She will take cartrophen injections (can be done at home) and Omega 3s for life.  She can also have gabapentin as needed if she is experiencing pain.  She must NEVER be given non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication

She has a medication she takes for spay incontinence and this will be continued as long as needed.

Assuming her repeat bloodwork comes back showing continued excellent liver function she should not need any further liver support medication.  If the issue recurs then liver medication would be warranted.

Due to Maia's ongoing needs, our regular adoption fee will be waived.  We ask instead for a donation of her adopters choice.

Up To Our Knees!

Boy oh boy, we're UP TO OUR KNEES in vet bills and we need your help badly!

We have Newfs with blown knees coming out of our ears!  This month in addition to our regular vet care, we have 4 dogs in our program all in need of orthopedic surgery (TPLO) for their knees.  Your help is desperately needed to raise funds to help us cover the costs of these specialized surgeries.

Sullivan - requires TPLO to repair a failed (non-tplo) surgery
Rhue - requires bilateral TPLO - we are doing this in two surgeries with a couple weeks in between
Walter - requires arthroscopic surgery for OCD in his shoulder, followed by TPLO
Maia (arriving soon) - will likely require TPLO surgery

Our total for orthopedic surgeries, with our rescue discount, will be over $15,000.
Gulp.

We'd like to bring in $10,000 this month to help offset these expenses, and we need your help!  Every penny helps, so please give what you can, no amount is too small.  To donate, please visit https://newf-friends.blogspot.com/p/donate.html
Tax receipts will be issued for your kind donation over $20

UPDATE:  June 21:  We are closing in on $5000, so nearly halfway to our goal.  Thank you to everyone who has donated so far, keep the donations coming!

Thank you for your support!
